The restaurant

Restaurant Peder Oxe is situated on one of the oldest squares in Copenhagen, Gråbrødretorv. The square is named after the first monastery in Copenhagen that was build in 1238.

The monks were named "Gråbrødre" because of their clothes - a grey cloak with a rope around the waist. The monks were not supposed to own anything, they wore rough sandals and had to beg for living.

The "Gråbrødre" were very popular because of their piety, but when the reformation strongly critized the monks they became so unpopular at last they were banned from the city.

Restaurant Peder Oxe is situated in a beautiful old house that has been restored with respect for the history. The rooms are light with hight ceilings. The restaurant grill and butcher counter is build of beautiful tiles from Portugal. The coloring has been kept in light ochre, light brown and white. The chairs have plaited seats and the woodwork is painted brown.

Peder Oxe is a romantic place but also stylish with white cloth on the tables.

In Peder Oxe you are just as welcome if you just feel like a small lunch with a cup of tea or a larger menu. The menu follows the changing seasons and we always use fresh first class raw materials prepared to classic dishes with inspiration from all over the world.

The ambience is always pleasent and we welcome all - from the young in love, the busy businessmen/women, the married couple, good friends and family.

Peder Oxe was the first restaurant in Denmark with a salad buffet. From the beginning we have only served fresh vegetables on the buffet; Mesclun, rucola, escarole, poupier and valerian with other fresh vegetables from Danish and foreign markets. Peder Oxe is well known for this luxurious buffet that offers the best of the season.

We only serve beef from free range cattle but we also serve freshly caught fish, shellfish, lamb and game.

Peder Oxe is known for only using first class raw materials and much of it brought to us by hunters, mushroom collectors and organic farmers that knows we treat the materials with great respect.

In Peder Oxe we like the food to present itself and therefore we avoid all unecessary decoration. When we serve a dish all the components are matched for optimal taste.

The girls in the restaurant will welcome you whether you just want to relax with a glass of wine, our salad buffet or a three course dinner.
